Barber-Collins Security - Frequently Asked Questions

How often can I change my uniform?

At Barber-Collins Security, we pride ourselves in the clean, professional image we provide to our Clientelle.  If your uniform becomes worn, does not fit properly or is looking dingy, you are encouraged to bring the items into the office to be replaced. We recommend that you call ahead to ensure that we have your size in stock as some sizes are more popular than others.

What do you consider full and part time employment?

Barber-Collins Security classifies any employee working less than 30 hours in a single week; a part-time/casual employee. Employees who are permanently scheduled to work 30 hours or more in a single week are classifed as full-time employees.

How do I request a transfer from my current site assignment?

Barber-Collins Security works diligently to find suitable assignments for all of their staff members.  If you have a change in circumstances and wish to make a change to your current assignment, you should contact the office by phone and speak with the recruiter.  Our Human Resource department has a program in place to track transfer requests.  If a position becomes available and you are considered a suitable candidate, you will be contacted directly.

Payroll Questions:

How do I request my vacation pay?

Vacation pay requests must be received in the office 7 days prior to the requested deposit date.  You can submit your request in writing and/or by email if you are simply requesting vacation pay.  If you are taking time off, you must complete the Vacation Pay Request Form and have your Site Superisor authorize the time requested.  You must also indicate on the form how many days/hours you will be taking, along with how much vacation pay you wish to receive.

If the request is not received in the office at least 7 days prior to the deposit date, you will be required to wait until the next scheduled deposit date for your vacation pay.

When is vacation pay paid out?

Vacation pay can be paid out each pay (as requested by the employee) or when it is requested "in writing" at least 7 days prior to the requested deposit date.  Barber-Collins Security also pays out the accumulated vacation pay to all staff at the end of May/ first of June (depending on which deposit falls closest to the first of June).  You are not required to take it at this time and are given several opportunities/reminders to call in and request that it not be paid out during the annual pay out.

Vacation pay is ONLY paid out within a regular payroll cycle.  Company cheques are not cut between pay periods. If you miss the deadline, you will be required to wait until the next pay.

How do I open my electronic pay stub?

Once you receive your pay stub by email, you will be prompted in Adobe that you need a password.  Currently your password is your SIN#.  There will be changes in the near future to the delivery process of electronic emails.  As soon as this change has been implemented, you will be contacted directly with these instructions.

Employees between the age of 18 and 65 are required by law to contribute to CPP even if they start collecting CPP early.   Once an employee turns 65 (so long as they are collecting CPP), they are given the option to "Opt Out" of contributing by completing this form and submitting the original to the payroll department at Barber-Collins Head Office along with proof that they are collecting CPP.  A copy will be made and placed in the employee file and the original document will be mailed to Winnipeg.

Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services Questions:

How do I renew my security licence?

The Ministry currently offers two options to renew your security licence.  You can complete the application online on the Ministry Website or by mail.  As a courtesy, Barber-Collins Security Head Office sends out the Licence Renewal form 2-3 months prior to the date your licence expires.  It is your responsibility to complete the application and submit it to the Ministry at least 6 weeks prior to the expiration date.  If you require assistance completing the form, you are welcome to contact the office.

Does Barber-Collins reimburse the cost of the security licence?

Barber-Collins will reimburse permanently assigned employees the full $80.00 for their security licence renewal so long as the employee provides Head Office with a copy of the latest licence within 60 days of its renewal date.  Casual employees are eligible for reimbursement once they have worked 150 hours from the date of the renewal.

We are required to have "proof" that you carry a valid licence and you will be contacted if our records show your licence is about to expire as you can not work for Barber-Collins Security without a valid Security Guard Licence.

Do I have to carry my security licence when I am working?

Yes.  You are required by law to carry your security licence on your person when you are working.

Who do I contact if I lose or damage my security licence?

If you discover that you have lost/misplaced your security licence or it becomes damaged, you must contact Service Ontario immediately to get a replacement issued.  As a reminder, you are not permitted to work if you do not have a valid security guard licence in your possession.

Do I have to contact the Office/Ministry if I move, have a name change or am convicted of a criminal offence?
